Cyberbullying Awareness & Support

What is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is when someone uses the internet or messaging apps to harass, threaten, embarrass, or harm someone. Basically when people are mean to you online! They might send nasty messages, make fun of you on Instagram or TikTok, or post stuff to embarrass you. It’s way more common now because of how common social media use had become, so kids may be exposed to it. Unlike in person bullying, cyberbullying can happen anytime and reach a large audience very quickly. The goal of this site is to spread awareness of cyberbullying and help people who may be dealing with it or know someone suffering from it to know what steps to take if it happens.

Kinds of cyberbullying

Cyberbullying can happen in a lot of different ways, it doesn’t always look the same!!! Sometimes it’s super duper obvious, but other times it’s a bit confusing to detect. Here are some kinds of cyberbullying:

One common type is harassment, where someone repeatedly sends mean, threatening, or insulting messages. This can happen through texts, DMs, comments, or emails, and it often doesn’t stop after just one message.

Another kind is name-calling or hate speech. This is when people use offensive language to insult someone based on how they look, where they’re from, their gender, or other personal traits. Posts and comments like this can hurt a tonne!

Spreading rumors or gossip is also a big part of cyberbullying. Someone might share false or embarrassing information about another person online, which can spread quickly and be really hard to stop once it’s out there.

There’s also impersonation, where someone pretends to be another person online. They might create a fake account using someone else’s name or photos to post embarrassing things or get them into trouble.

Another kind is exclusion, which might not seem as serious but can still be really hurtful and mean. This happens when someone is intentionally left out of group chats, games, or online community stuff, especially when it’s done to make them feel sad and unwanted.

Sharing private photos or messages without permission is a really serious type of cyberbullying. This breaks trust and can be mega upsetting for the person affected.

Sometimes people will try convince you these things aren't really that deep and that you're overreacting but if its a big thing to you then thats what matters! Do what makes you feel the safest and don't worry about people who try to make you think you're being silly.
